A Tune on the Jukebox

tired and grumpy
a slow train to Blackpool -
the smell of diesel

It is traditional for the first verse of a renga sequence to juxtapose two indirectly related images, in short to contain within itself the type of linkage that elsewhere exists between the verses. Here, in the smell of diesel - at once harsh and cloying - the poets convey perfectly the woozy discomfort of second class travel - with more than a hint of the morning after the night before... for parent and child alike.
